Overlord of the Seas - USPS Issues 2017 Sharks Forever Stamps
The United States Postal Service will honor sharks by issuing Sharks Forever stamps featuring five species that live in American waters: the mako, thresher, great white, hammerhead, and whale shark.
Sam Weber, a Brooklyn, New York-based artist, based his five illustrations on images captured by underwater photographers. He created clear, realistic depictions of sharks in action using these references and the advice of shark experts. Weber began with a pencil sketch and then used his computer to add detail, dimension, and color. Derry Noyes of Washington, DC, designed the pane.
Sharks, as apex predators, keep other marine life in check, and as a result, they play an important role in regulating our largest ecosystem — the oceans. As one of the country's oldest public service organizations, the Postal Service takes pride in using its stamps to raise awareness of important issues. The new stamps will help to raise awareness of the importance of shark conservation as well as a greater respect and admiration for these incredible creatures.
